Many people think that gardens need to be big spaces in large backyards. Or, maybe, a plot in the local community garden. Here are two ideas that may change your mind!

The first, and most simple, is pictured above. A bag of potting soil, on a mesh stand, is an instant and self contained garden.

The underside of the bag has been pierced with an ice pick to allow for drainage. The top of the bag, cut with a utility knife, leaves a border, so the soil doesn't spill out. Seeds can be sown directly into the bag or add plants that are already started.

This is a great idea for small children. The height is just right for them to tend their very own garden. It would also make an interesting schoolroom project.

The second idea is just a little garden geeky. This system is perfect if you travel a lot but still would like a garden.

The Bucket Gardening System utilizes 5 gallon buckets for growing vegetables. The bottoms are drilled for an opening to allow a mesh basket to be inserted. The bucket is then placed on top of a framed 2"x4" framed gutter.

Working by osmosis, the water is drawn up into the bucket. The water level is regulated with a float and can be sourced through a hose or a rain barrel.
