Street racing. It's a growing section on the Sioux Falls police complaint blotter, and they're promising a crackdown as part of the summer's safe driving campaign.

Reckless driving and loud motorcycles will also be enforced. According to the Associated Press, 22 vehicles, 7 of which were motorcycles, were ticketed last year under Sioux Falls' vehicle noise ordinance, which is not to exceed 80 decibels.

The Argus Leader reported that City Councilor Kenny Anderson Jr. thinks the ordinance may need some amending since a new Harley Davidson motorcycle straight from the factory can exceed the 80 decibel noise ordinance by 3 decibels.

Street racing is also a growing problem. Souped up compact cars with modified muffler systems can clearly exceed the noise ordinance. Put two of them together illegally racing on a city street and it can be heard for miles on a quiet night.

The art of trying to get a louder vehicle isn't exactly new. I can remember my first motorcycle when I turned 16. The first question my friends asked was, "when are going to take that baffle out of the muffler?"
