The South Dakota Department of Transportation has reopened the Interstate 90 Exit 387 overpass south of Hartford. For now only one lane of traffic is allowed.

A press release from the DOT says traffic over the bridge will be restricted to a maximum width of 12-feet and a weight limit of 15-tons gross vehicle weight and will be controlled with temporary signals on both sides of the overpass.

An official from the DOT says the signaling system is able to gauge traffic flow by either detection of vehicles or timing intervals. There will be some time taken to investigate traffic patterns over the bridge before settling on a consistent mode of signaling on the overpass.

Vehicles that are too wide or heavy can use Exit 389 east of Hartford. Meanwhile permanent repairs are currently being designed and the repair work is anticipated to be complete prior to December of this year.

The bridge was damaged when a westbound semi-truck hauling an excavator struck the underside of the span.
