Patty’s Ponderings – Comfort Food Cravings
My BFF Georgie’s potato salad and chocolate marzipan cake, peppercorn swiss bread from Breadsmith, apricot coffeecake and cheese-olive spread from Hyvee, gourmet vegetarian pizza from Papa Murphy’s, homemade ham & bean soup- – -these are all delicious indulgences which I must have once-in-a-while just to survive life’s foibles.
For Ben, pizza is a soul soother anytime. My friend Andy says his wife makes him a noodle casserole that he could eat everyday! My friend Jonny adores Skyline Cincinnati chili which he sometimes orders by the case! For my sister in Colorado chocolate, (in particular Cadbury’s Fruit & Nut bar), is sometimes the only thing that can tame the inner demons, when life’s issues prove too taxing. Brownies do it for my sister in Montana.
Right or wrong placating oneself with comfort food has been a tradition dating back- – forever. The term comfort food has only been around since 1977 according to Webster’s Dictionary, but the category, no matter the moniker has always existed. A food which soothes, cheers, calms, and warms, is by definition comforting.
I know, I know there is an obesity epidemic in our country! It has been a problem in my family and many others, so believe me when I tell you, I’m not blaming the creators of these savory items, or the food industry in general. I just wish science could come up with a pill to cure the problem, or motivate a person to workout, because- – to completely mangle Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, “the fault dear friend is not in our comfort food, but in ourselves.”
Looks like a good day to fire up the ham & bean soup!
