Patty’s Ponderings: Give A Little If You Can
I’m highly emotional right now. I usually am during the Cure Kids Cancer Radiothon. Oh who am I kidding, I always am! I can’t help it, I care, and I want you to care too.
As I sit here in the lobby of the Sanford Children’s Castle, I keep thinking of all the things people do in their lives, which cost money. From the very simple, (Starbucks, quick burger for lunch, movie & popcorn), to the very extravagant, (Mexican vacations, luxury suvs, jewelry), we humans spend a lot of money. Sometimes we spend with purpose, but quite often, mindlessly. But spend it we do. I guess that is why we call it, “disposable income”.
I’m also thinking about the families of children diagnosed with cancer here at Sanford Children’s, (currently 59 kids in active treatment, that’s an above average occurrence for a year and it’s only April).
They won’t be taking Mexican vacations, or ordering pizza every Saturday night, or buying new lawn furniture for the patio. They will be traveling back and forth to the hospital, bringing their children in for chemotherapy and radiation. They may be living on one salary for a long time. They’ll be wiping tears after needle sticks and blood draws. They’ll hold their child and explain to them why they feel so awful, why their hair is falling out, why it’s not their fault this happened and that feeling this bad will eventually lead to them feeling much better. And secretly hoping and praying that it will.
I’m not saying you should give up anything you’ve worked hard and saved for. I’m just asking you to step outside yourself and think about someone else. We all tend to have tunnel vision about ourselves, our families, our friends. We live with a, “me and mine” mentality a lot of the time. (There are extraordinary beings that do not and we all thank God for them.)
So for just a moment think of the anguish of someone who might live right down the street from you and maybe pass on your large, skinny, half-caf, zebra mocha with light whip and donate that five dollars to the Cure Kids Cancer Radiothon. You can call 328-5750, or toll-free at 1-800-601-5085 and even give online at our website. Thank you!
