Patty’s Ponderings–Thank-you Notes
When was the last time you wrote a thank-you note? When was the last time you received one? The reason I’m asking is because when I was sprucing my house this weekend, (I hate to use the term cleaning, because- -I really wasn’t) I came across two of them which I have saved for some time now, because they were so special.
One was from my friend Mel’s daughter Randi. It thanked me for attending her high-school graduation open house and for the gift I gave her. It was handwritten on a cute stationery card and exquisitely and succinctly let me know that my presence in her life meant a great deal to her and her mom.
The second precious thank-you note was from my dear friend Roxanne’s son, Kyle and his new wife Tami. I’ve known Kyle since he was a toddler, so he’s really just another one of my kids. He is without question one of the kindest, most loving young men I’ve ever known. I met Tami for the first time about 6 years ago at our radiothon for Cure Kids Cancer. One of Tami’s two adorable sons is a cancer survivor and she was a vivacious yet soft-spoken pillar of strength.
There were several years before their first meeting, which for both of them, were at best, tumultuous and at worst, agonizing. When these two amazing people met, fell in love and married, you could almost hear the choir of family and friends singing the “Hallelujah Chorus”! Tami wrote a lovely note to thank me for being at her bridal shower, their wedding and for their gift, all while telling me how glad she was to have Kyle’s “auntie” in her life too.
I still tear up when I read these heartfelt notes, heck, I’m tearing up now! But my point is…thank-you notes should still have a place in our lives. That simple card or note conveys more than any tweet, text, email or facebook post ever could, because you bought it, thought about it, took a pen into your hands, put your heart’s feelings into words and sent it. Believe me when I say the impact can be extraordinary!
