Patty’s Ponderings (Weekend Edition) – Late Night Pizza Snafu
Yesterday was a long work day. It started with waking up at 4 am and ended around 11 pm when I stumbled into bed. It was the in-between occurrences that caused my predicament!
I have had reflux disease since my teens and only started treating it as an adult, first with a new drug, (available only by prescription at that time), called Prevacid. It seemed to work like a charm and eventually due to insurance changes I had to stop taking it. I simply couldn’t afford it then. So I began taking Prilosec which had been approved for sale, over-the-counter (OTC) to consumers.
It has been doing a fairly decent job for years, but as I’ve grown–um- -up- -not older, (sure let’s go with that), I have some issues with acid breakthrough in the evening. Especially if I deem it necessary to have a late night snack of a spicy nature, or happen to eat supper at a later hour than usual.
That is what happened last night. I didn’t finish up with work stuff until close to 7 pm and I had no intention of whipping up a meal. Didn’t want a sandwich, or a salad, tacos, or burgers- -but always want pizza! So the last thing I did before I left work, was order a deliciously greasy multi-meat pizza with mushrooms and black olives online for carryout.
I got my hot, cheesy creation home and put it box and all in the oven, so it could cool just a bit, whilst I walked and fed my giant puppies. That chore was done, I looked at the clock, knowing I was tempting the stomach acid “gods” and removed the pizza from the oven. It was now just the right temperature, hot, but not too hot–cheesy, meaty, chewy–delicious! Three slices later, I stopped noshing and began regretting.
I instantly started feeling sleepy and knew better, but I went to bed much sooner than I should have. I awoke with a start, having already aspirated the nasty acid into my lungs! It was only 1:30 in the morning, so I’d been asleep for about three hours. Throat burning, eyes watering, stomach churning, coughing and yet so astonishingly tired, I got up, headed for some antacid tablets in the bathroom and a drink of water.
I’d done it; completely screwed up a good night’s sleep! The only solution was sitting up in the living room, sipping bubbly mineral water, sucking on cough drops to calm the fire in my throat and watching MEtv until it started getting light outside!
So, you think I’ve learned my lesson?
Don’t be ridiculous!
