RAPID CITY - Rapid City police say a man is in critical condition after an officer shot him outside the public library when he tried to attack them with a butcher knife.

Police say they responded to the library about 6 p.m. after multiple callers reported that a man in his early 20s had thrown a rock through a library window and was in possession of a large knife.

They say that when the man aggressively attempted to attack responding officers, Officer Jerry Moore fired several shots to stop the attack. Moore is a 25-year veteran of the department.

The officers were not injured.

The investigation has been turned over to the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation.
