For the first time in their lives Jessica Scherlen's three children won't have their father to escort them to school. Justin Scherlen, 39, was an Amarillo, Texas police officer and in early August of 2015 he died from injuries he received in a traffic accident.

Well, this year the kids finally have something to smile about as a dozen Amarillo police officers showed up to escort Jessica's youngest to kindergarten. One by one the officers lined up and gave little Jackson hugs and words of encouragement as he entered the classroom.

Jessica Scherlen thinks Jackson “really enjoyed having everyone here. Just to know that he’s still loved by the blue family and that they still care. Emotionally, it’s awesome to see.”

The officers also escorted Scherlen’s fourth and second graders to their first day of school.
