‘Rambo 5′ May Focus on Sylvester Stallone Fighting Mexican Cartels

Sylvester Stallone has had two great franchise characters, Rocky Balboa and John Rambo, and was able to successfully resurrect both over the last decade. But, though Balboa’s gloves are hung up (even if Stallone recently paid homage to that character), it looks like we’re going to get a ‘Rambo 5′ that promises to be one of the most thoughtful of the Stallone sequels.

The German website Splendid Medien AG ran this press release, which mentioned the fifth film and the paragraph about it is translated thusly (h/t Slashfilm):

With “Rambo V” Sylvester Stallone returns to his signature role. This time he messes with the Mexican cartel. Stallone, who is also responsible for the screenplay, describes the new Rambo as his version of “No Country for Old Men.” Producer is like the last “Rambo”, Avi Lerner (“The Expendables 1-3″).

Stallone’s version of ‘No Country for Old Men’ you say? That doesn’t sound much like any of the previous entries, which turned a combat vet suffering from PTSD into the man who single-handledly won the Vietnam War after the fact. We’re guessing (since it’s been a plot point in the last three sequels) that Rambo will be hired to rescue someone who’s being kept prisoner, but invoking the Coen Brothers piques our interest.

The press release aspect makes this seem legitimate, though there’s no cast, crew or date of production start, which means this could just be something they want to make, but will never get around to actually making (not to mention, the television series, which was announced last year). That said, after the release of ‘The Expendables 3,’ it makes sense that Stallone would return to something that’s worked for him before, and the man seems to want to keep working. We’re guessing we won’t see this until early 2016 if it ever does comes to pass.
