Richard Attenborough, acclaimed British actor and director, has died at 90. According to CBS News, his son, Michael Attenborough, made the confirmation to the BBC.

Richard Attenborough first started as an actor as far back as 1942 in the movie 'In Which We Serve.' His acting career spanned nearly seven decades, with his best known theatrical roles being Santa Claus/Kris Kringle in the remake of 'Miracle of 34th Street,' and InGen CEO John Hammond in 'Jurassic Park' and 'The Lost World: Jurassic Park.'

As a director, his greatest work was the 1982 film 'Gandhi' based on the life work of Mohandas K. Gandhi. The film won nine Academy Awards that year, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor in a Leading Role (which went to Ben Kingsley). Other notable films directed by Attenborough include 1985's 'A Chorus Line' and 1992's 'Chaplin' starring Robert Downey Jr. as Charlie Chaplin.
