SDSU’s Garner Claims Summit League Title

MUNCIE, IN — South Dakota State‘s Brooke Garner claimed her second career outdoor hammer throw title on Thursday at The Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She won the event with her toss of 195’ 3.00”, which is also a new conference meet record. Her hammer throw title is her second in three years.

Garner was not only the Jackrabbit to finish in the top-ten in the hammer throw; three other throwers joined her as well. Shelby Assmus finished fourth with her distance of 168’ 8.00” and  Amy Paulzine recorded a personal best of 166’ 8.00” to place sixth. Her previous best was 159’ 4.00”, which she set earlier this year at the Howard Wood Dakota Relays. McKenzie Johnson rounded out the top-eight with her distance of 161’ 5.00”, just four inches shy of her personal best.

In the javelin throw, the Jackrabbits had two athletes place in the top-ten. Placing third in the event was Amy Paulzine who recorded a distance of 145’ 9.00”. Becca Fischer placed ninth with her new personal best of 111’ 7.00”; her previous mark was 106’ 11.00”.

Both Erin Hargens and Courtney Neubert placed in the top-eight in the 10,000-meter run. Hargens clocked in at 37:42.40 to finish sixth and Neubert finished with a time of 37:42.06 to take eighth.

Amy Leiferman tied her personal best in the pole vault with her mark of 11’ 7.75”.

The Jackrabbits are currently in third place with 29 total points.

The Jackrabbits will back in action on Friday starting at 3 p.m. with the high jump and the running events start at 4:30 p.m. with the 100-meter hurdles.

In the men’s competition, despite the poor weather the Jackrabbits shined in the 10,000-meter run at The Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Jacks claimed three out of the top four spots, including Trent Lusignan winning with his time of 30:10.47. Michael Krsnak finished third when he clocked in at 30:37.48 and right behind him in fourth place was Anthony Bongard with a time of 30:39.08.

In the hammer throw, Cullen Mack finished eighth with his throw of 168’ 5.00”. Mack set a new personal best in the event; his previous mark was 166’ 9.00”.

Cory Greenway and Bennett Mercil represented the Jackrabbits in the decathlon.

Greenway currently stands in sixth place with 3148 points and Mercil is in eighth with 3118 points.

Greenway recorded personal bests in four events during the decathlon competition. He set personal bests in the 100-meter dash (11.30), the shot put (38’ 1.50”), the 400-meter dash (51.79) and the high jump (5’ 4.50”). Greenway also recorded a distance of 18’ 11.75” in the long jump.

In the javelin throw, he recorded a distance of 143’ 1.00”.

Mercil ran a time of 11.85 in the 100-meter dash to start the decathlon. In the long jump, he recorded a distance of 20’ 9.75”. Mercil took third in the shot put event with a distance of 38’ 11.75”. He posted a height of 5’ 5.75” in the high jump and ended the day with a time of 53.57 in the 400-meter dash.

SDSU is currently in second place with 22 points.

The Jackrabbits will back in action on Friday starting at 11 a.m. with the day two events of the decathlon. The field events will begin at 3 p.m. with the long jump and the running events start with 110-meter hurdles at 4:30 p.m.
