More and more national retailers have announced plans to stay closed on Thanksgiving Day so their employees can enjoy the day with their family. See the newest, updated list below.

What do you plan on doing Thanksgiving Day? Will you be enjoying a delicious turkey dinner with family and friends, or will you be wading through crowds to find the best price on a Crock-Pot?

Several years ago, I remember K-mart being one of the first retailers to open on Thanksgiving Day. Eventually Walmart, Target, Sears, Best Buy and many others were opening at 5:00 PM or earlier on Thanksgiving Day.

Last year, it was out of control. It seemed more stores were OPEN than CLOSED on Thanksgiving Day.

I get it. It fuels the economy. If you want to venture out on a day we're supposed to give thanks for our blessings, go ahead. You're getting a bargain and our city is making making a ton of money. Unfortunately, these stores need a full staff. If a retailer is going to be open on Thanksgiving, at least give your employees the choice to work that day and if they do volunteer, make it worth it. Provide them with free meals that day, give them double pay, a comp day and maybe even a generous discount on merchandise.

Three national retailers have confirmed they will not open their doors in Sioux Falls on Thanksgiving Day include Game Stop, Mattress Firm and Staples. Game Stop will open no earlier than 5:00 AM on Black Friday. Staples will open their doors at 6:00 AM on Friday, November 27, 2015. Mattress Firm will also be closed on Thanksgiving Day and has been for 29 years. They'll open no earlier than 8:00 AM on Black Friday.

UPDATE: These Sioux Falls stores will also not be open on Thanksgiving:

  • Costco
  • TJ Maxx
  • Petco
  • JoAnn Fabrics
  • Pier 1 Imports
  • Home Depot
  • Lowe's
  • Burlington Coat Factory
  • Barnes and Noble
  • Sam's Club
  • Ace Hardware
  • AT&T
  • Guitar Center
  • Hobby Lobby
  • PetSmart
  • Tractor Supply Company

You will NOT see me shopping for a bargain on Thanksgiving Day. I love Thanksgiving. It's my favorite holiday and I plan to slip on my fat pants, cook and enjoy, with my family, a huge turkey dinner, plus ham, with mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, stuffing, pecan pie and pumpkin pie. Then, I'm going to sit back in an easy chair, watch TV and enjoy a day off.  By the way, you won't see me crowd surfing on Black Friday either. No discount in the world is big enough for me to battle the traffic and crowds.
