The video is jaw-dropping, the circumstances are still being investigated by school officials and sheriff's deputies in South Carolina. The unsettling footage was taken on another student's cell phone in the Spring Valley High School classroom in Columbia, South Carolina.

Deputy Ben Fields has been banned from the schools in the district and placed on administrative leave until the investigation is concluded. The Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott was out of the area at the time the incident occurred but said he was deeply disturbed by what he saw on the video and at the same time asked the public for patience as the investigation continues.

The details which have been gleaned so far? A female student was being disruptive and was asked to leave the classroom. When she resisted the SRO was brought in, she again resisted his insistence that she get up and leave. Officer Fields then proceeded to wrap his arm around her neck, knock her out of her desk, throw her across the classroom floor and then cuff and remove her.

I'm sure there will be explanations all around, and lawsuits to follow, but that doesn't mitigate the fact that this situation is at best shocking and at worst career-ending.
