Police say a woman who was being arrested for shoplifting at a Sioux Falls grocery store assaulted an officer as she was being arrested Tuesday afternoon and wound up with more charges against her.

Lieutenant Loren McManus says a loss prevention officer at the Hy-Vee store on South Minnesota Avenue saw the woman hide the hair care products and try to leave the store.

McManus says shoplifting is a Class 2 misdemeanor, so the citizen makes the arrest and police take custody. He says the suspect became combative with officers as they went to handcuff her and put her in the squad car.

He says she kicked one officer several times, striking him in the lower right leg.

McManus says the officer was not injured, but 25-year-old Victoria Meyer of Garretson was charged with simple assault on law enforcement, false impersonation and second-degree petty theft.
