The canine flu has found its way into South Dakota. The first two confirmed cases of the H3N2 strain of the dog flu virus have shown up in Rapid City. That according to according to State Veterinarian Dr. Dustin Oedekoven, who suspects there’s been unconfirmed cases elsewhere in the state as well.

This particular strain of canine influenza has sickened numerous dogs throughout the midwest, but fortunately only killed a few. This strain does not have a history of affecting humans and is not likely to kill your dog. But it can be easily transmitted from dog to dog and can cause respiratory disease symptoms, including fever and coughing.

Experts say the strain can be spread through direct contact with other dogs and by contact with contaminated objects.

The good news according Oedekoven, the majority of the dogs who have been confirmed or suspected of having H3N2 are recovering just fine.

Of the documented cases here in South Dakota, most have been connected to boarding facilities, where dogs spend extended periods of time around other dogs.

Places like doggie daycares, dog parks and boarding facilities are all at increased risk of becoming infected according to Oedekoven. He recommends that owners of dog-related businesses consult local veterinarians to develop biosecurity measures.
