SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries finalized a pair of trades on Friday afternoon, acquiring LHP Matt Bywater from the Atlantic League’s Somerset Patriots in exchange for cash considerations. The Canaries have also traded RHP Chase Johnson to the Wichita Wingnuts for cash.

Bywater, 26, appeared in six games for Somerset, making five starts over 17 1/3 innings before being traded to Sioux Falls. He posted an 0-2 record and 5.71 ERA for the Patriots, striking out 19 batters along the way.

The Thousand Oaks, CA native was originally drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 7th round of the 2010 MLB amateur draft. Bywater appeared in 48 minor league games in the Baltimore organization, going 5-9 with a 3.81 ERA. He holds an overall record of 23-22 to go along with his 3.18 ERA.

Tonight will be the 100 career appearance for Bywater, and the 74th start of his six-year career. He will make his Canaries debut tonight, starting the opening game of the weekend series against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

Chase Johnson goes back to the Wichita Wingnuts after appearing in 45 games for the Canaries over parts of two seasons. The Right-hander went 5-2 while recording 18 saves over 47 1/3 innings of work.

Johnson appeared in 13 games for the Wingnuts during the 2014 season, including 5 appearances during the American Association playoffs.
