Sioux Falls Construction Season Begins. 41st Project Begins Monday, March 31st

Warmer weather brings out many things include orange construction cones. Beginning Monday, March 31st west 41st Street from Ellis Road to east of Grinnell Avenue will close to begin the first phase of construction of West 41st Street. The project will widen 41st Street from Ellis Road to Sertoma Avenue from the existing two lanes to four lanes with a center median, turn lanes, bike lanes, and landscaping. The project also will reconstruct and expand the intersections of 41st Street and Sertoma Avenue and 41st Street and Ellis Road.

During construction, through traffic for 41st Street will be detoured north to 26th Street. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes. Access to the businesses and residential area along 41st Street will be maintained, but no through traffic will be allowed. The project will be substantially completed in November, with final completion scheduled for the spring of 2015.

“This year will be another busy road construction season for the City of Sioux Falls,” says Brad Ludens, Principal Engineer. “Drivers can expect orange barrels and cones in every corner of the city as we strive to Keep Sioux Falls Moving.”

In 2014, several other major street construction projects are planned for Sioux Falls.

  • The Russell Street project will continue for the second and final year, as the eastbound lanes between Westport Avenue and Minnesota Avenue are reconstructed. Work has continued throughout the winter and is scheduled to be complete in October.
  • The intersection of 10th Street and Sycamore Avenue will be reconstructed, adding right turn lanes and dual left turn lanes. Work on this joint City of Sioux Falls/South Dakota Department of Transportation project is expected to begin in April and is scheduled to be complete in October.
  • 12th Street from Carolyn Avenue to Kiwanis Avenue will receive extensive concrete joint repairs. Work is expected to begin in April and is scheduled to be complete within 75 working days and by November 1.
  • Second Avenue from 10th Street to 11th Street will be reconstructed, as the flagship project affecting downtown. Work is expected to begin in May and is scheduled to be complete in July.
  • Eighth Street from Fairfax Avenue to Sherman Avenue will be reconstructed and realigned at Cliff Avenue. Work is expected to begin in May and is scheduled to be complete in October.

Micro surfacing, neighborhood street reconstruction, concrete pavement repairs, and asphalt mill and overlay also will improve about 650 blocks of streets. In 2014, the City will invest $31.6 million for highways and street improvement projects across the community.
