Sioux Falls is a Great Career Starting Place

You have your college diploma. Now what? Where should you look to start what you hope will be a rewarding career in your chosen field? That is a tough question with as many answers and as much advice as you could possibly imagine. Thank goodness, for personal finance website WalletHub.

Their team of data crunchers went to work comparing 150 of the largest cities in the United States to help recent college grads make decisions about where to go and what to expect when searching for that first "foot-in-the-door" opportunity. Out of those 150 cities, Sioux Falls came in at 12th position overall.

There are two basic categories which they used: A) Professional opportunities and B) Quality of life; to compare all 150 cities. There were multiple sub-categories under the two main divisions. Under Professional opportunities, they explored availability of entry-level jobs, average starting salaries, annual job growth rates, job security, and unemployment rates.

The Quality of life issues they explored included; housing affordability, average length of  the work week, fun/family/& single friendliness, strength of social ties, average commute times and more.

As usual they also chatted with a number of experts who had great advice for young people looking to launch careers, including Darrell Sawyer, who is the Assistant Vice President for Student Development in the Career & Professional Development Center at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.

He gave this advice to young job applicants on how to get a foot up on the competition:

Demonstrate that they are well-rounded individuals in addition to having expertise in their subject area and also exhibit the skills of an emerging professional in areas such as communication, leadership, teamwork, openness to diverse cultures, integrity and involvement in community service. In addition a strong work ethic and a positive can-do attitude will set them apart from other applicants."
