February is Responsible Pet Owner Month, however the Sioux Falls Humane Society encourages that effort all the time.

Some of the basics like food, water and exercise are easy to spot. Malorie Adamson says there are other challenges that lie below the surface with some pets. “When you’re looking at the different breeds, some of them are prone to different health issues. Make sure you take into consideration if you can afford the vet bills and medications.”

Adamson says her own experience with one particular breed underscores what potential pet owners should consider. “Bulldogs are a lot more prone to health issues with their joints, respiratory system and frequently suffer from allergies. That was something I had to consider if I could financially support that animal due to what her medical costs would be for me.”

Knowing your pet’s tendencies is also encouraged. Adamson says a pet that acts abnormal over a period of days could be a sign of sickness that needs attention by a veterinarian.

If you do go to the Humane Society for a pet, they will do their best to match an owner with a pet. Plus the pet must be spayed or neutered within 90 days of pickup for population control purposes.
