When bitterly cold winters keep you cooped up indoors for months at a time, you dream of all of the amazing outdoor things you're going to do when the weather finally gets nice.

In Sioux Falls we know all about that, so it's no surprise that we ranked highly on a recent list of the 'Most Adventurous Cities in America'.

Men's Health compiled the rundown by examining the numbers of people participating in sports and other vigorous activities. They also looked at a city's ratio of parks to overall size, and how much money is expended on recreational endeavors.

Under those guidelines, Sioux Falls checks in at number 14 overall.

This is the time of year when our adventurous spirit shines with warmer temperatures getting us out to the golf courses, tennis courts, bike trails, and parks. It's also a great time to do some paddling up and down the Big Sioux River.

A quick perusal of the top ten drives home the point that cities that deal with some of the harshest winter conditions are home to some of the most adventurous folks in the country.

In fact, three of the top four cities all deal with long, drawn out cold stretches each year:

  1. Anchorage, Alaska
  2. Austin, Texas
  3. Madison, Wisconsin
  4. Minneapolis, Minnesota
  5. San Diego, California
  6. Raleigh, North Carolina
  7. Virginia Beach, Virginia
  8. Boston, Massachusetts
  9. Seattle, Washington
  10. Fargo, North Dakota
