Sioux Falls Police Information Officer Sam Clemens says a local resident got scammed out of thousands of dollars.

"We had a 69-year-old man that received a mailing informing him that he had just won two and a half million dollars. This was back in October. Over the past several weeks, he ended up sending these people over 11 thousand dollars. One of them is one large lump sum of 10 thousand dollars. We see this time and time again. Whether it's a mailing, email or phone call---there are people out there looking to take advantage of others."

Clemens says these scams have one thing in common!

"They have a big cash prize. Yet, they are requiring you to send some type of money. That should really be the red flag. If you have to send some type of money, it's probably not legitimate. You should also do some checking before you send money."

Clemens says it's unlikely the scam victim will be able to get back the money he sent.
