Police say a man whose car struck a power pole Monday afternoon on North Marion Road in Sioux Falls was found a few hours later in a house where he had allegedly forced his way in.

Information Officer Sam Clemens says police were called after 5:00 p.m. to the 500 block of South Grange Avenue, where a resident came home to find his back door open, his cell phone missing and a man he didn’t know was sleeping on a bed in his basement with the cell phone beside him.

Clemens says the resident went upstairs and used a different phone to call police:

Clemens says the alleged burglar, identified as 24-year-old Nicholas Ryan Hemscher, a transient from Sioux Falls, was charged with intentional damage to property, second-degree burglary and petty theft.

Clemens says Hemscher had also been involved in a car-pole crash around 2:30pm to the 1600 block of North Marion Road. He says Hemscher was taken to a hospital, cleared and released, and he was located later in the house on South Grange Avenue, where he told officers he thought he was on Marion Road.
