Sioux Falls Police Information Officer Sam Clemens says two rapes have been solved in the city.

Police Information Officer Sam Clemens says a suspect has been arrested in connection with the February sexual assault.

"A woman left her apartment unlocked. A guy walked in and ended up sexually assaulting the victim. We were able to track him down. After the act was completed he went next door to a gas station and bought some cigarettes. That was how we were able to figure out who he was. There was an arrest warrant issued on Thursday for 2nd degree rape. He was arrested on that charge."

The suspect has been identified as 23-year-old Mario-Banedas-Jaen of Sioux Falls.

Clemens says police also arrested a Sioux Falls man in another rape.

"This one took place October 1st of last year. The victim was putting some stuff away in her garage after a bonfire. She was hit over the head with some type of object or punched. When she regained consciousness, there was a man on top of her that was raping her. We were able to get DNA from a sexual assault kit which led us to one particular person. A search warrant was gone to get his DNA. This was confirmed as a match.

Clemens says 31-year-old Jonathon Packard was charged with second-degree rape.

In both rapes, Clemens says the victims had no connection with their attackers.
