Police Chief Doug Barthel is a law enforcement official who knows what it takes to build a strong community relationship. During a radio interview on Wednesday, the Police Chief emphasized what is really important to the citizens of Sioux Falls.

"That's the key to this business we're in. If we don't have the people behind us, there's no doubt our job is more difficult to do. Part of the solution is an out reach to the residents and developing those relationships."

In light of the Chief's commitment to create a positive relationship in law enforcement, two Coffee with a Cop events were recently held at local restaurants.

"This new Coffee with a Cop event really is just a chance for Sioux Falls citizens to interact with our officers, ask questions, voice concerns, and get to know the people serving their neighborhoods."

From his vantage point, the Chief says the majority of contacts law enforcement has with the public happen during emergencies, or emotional situations. Those situations, according to the Chief, are not always the most effective times for relationship building with the community, and some community members may feel that officers are unapproachable on the street.

The bottom line is this:  Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for a relaxed, one-on-one interaction.

Kudos to Chief Barthel and the entire Sioux Falls Police Department for reaching out to the community and producing solid results!

Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by the United States Department of Justice.
