A Sioux Falls woman was arrested on Thursday in the 3600 Block of North Career Avenue after she allegedly left her one-year-old daughter in a running car.

“A lady showed up at a friend’s apartment. The woman wasn’t expected. The person in the apartment thought she was intoxicated. It turns out she is a mother," explained Sioux Falls Police Department Spokesman Sam Clemens.

"About an hour later there was another lady in the same apartment complex. She heard a child screaming and crying. She found the infant inside a car that was left running. It turns out this was the same mother. Mom had left child behind. We aren’t really sure why she did that. Officers were able to find her eventually.”

Clemens says the mom had been drinking.

“Yes! She was intoxicated and there was also some marijuana found in her car.”

Clemens says 30-year-old Constance Fondern of Sioux Falls was charged with child abuse, resisting arrest and spitting on an officer.

The infant is being cared for by a relative.
