Shopping during the Holiday Season can present unique danger! Taking a few preventative measures can help keep your Holiday joyous.

Sioux Falls Police Information Officer Sam Clemens urges shoppers to be aware of their surroundings at all times.

"It's going to make people a good witness if they happen to see something. More important it will keep them away from any bad situations. If they see something and it just doesn't seem right---stay clear of it. If it means parking in a different area or staying with some friends---do it!"

If you do feel threatened, Clemens says you need to call authorities.

"If you have a gut feeling that something just doesn't seem right---you can always call police. We can check it out!"

Here are some additional tips to keep you safe:

1. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash

2. Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member.

3. Always carry your driver's license or identification along with necessary cash, checks and/or a credit card you expect to use.

4. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.

5. The most important key to using your ATM card safely is to be observant and look around for any suspicious persons or activity near the ATM machine, especially during the Holiday Season.

Clemens says criminals take advantage of the Holiday Season to prey on those who are unsuspecting and generous.
