Sioux Falls Reminds Drivers, Cyclists to Be Aware of Bike Safety

People who get around Sioux Falls on foot, or by using either two wheels or four wheels are being reminded again of their responsibilities.

City Transportation Planner Sam Trebilcock says since bicycles can be ridden on the street, it’s important to share the road. He says that includes following all traffic laws:

The city recently updated its bicycle laws, and Trebilcock says a draft update of the Sioux Falls Bicycle Plan will be available for public comment later this year. He also says videos and other information can be found on the city website at siouxfalls.org/bike-safety.

Meanwhile, a Sioux Falls police official says two serious car-bicycle crashes one week apart show the need for people on two or four wheels to pay attention.

A 22-year-old woman was killed last week when her bicycle was struck by a vehicle on West 49th Street, and a 15-year-old girl was injured Wednesday when she and her bike were struck and dragged for 15 feet on West 41st Street.

Information Officer Sam Clemens says the two crashes have something in common:

While it may seem as if we’ve seen a high number of car-bicycle crashes recently, Clemens says the totals are about the same as in 2013. But he says most crashes are easily preventable as long as drivers are driving defensively.
