Concerns about threats of possible gun violence prompted an investigation Monday morning by Sioux Falls School Administration and the Sioux Falls Police.

In a message sent to parents Monday morning the district explained that a high school student alerted the office to an Instagram post that indicated a threat of gun violence.

Officials found the the threat to not be credible. The post in question was one that had had been shared many times and had made it's way to Sioux Falls.

The Sioux Falls School District added that there is no threat here and that the students are safe.

Here is the text of the message sent to parents:

Hello Sioux Falls School District Families. This call is to inform you that just before school started this morning, a high school student brought a message into the office that was found on Instagram. The message indicated a threat of gun violence. Administration, along with Sioux Falls Police, thoroughly investigated and found this is not a credible threat for schools in Sioux Falls. The actual message was generated regarding a school in Florida and through social media that message made its way to Sioux Falls. There is no threat here and your students are safe. We wanted you to have this information because, as you can see, news travels fast. Technology is a powerful tool – please talk with your student about using it to spread the positive things going on at their school and not for feeding into rumors and fear. If you have questions, please contact your school office. Thank you.
