Police say a 17-year-old from Sioux Falls was already charged with escape, and now he faces a second charge after he got away from officers late Monday night.

Officer Sam Clemens says an officer making a traffic stop at 12th and Hawthorne around 11:30pm recognized one of the four teens in the car as an escapee.

Clemens says the 17-year-old fought as officers tried to handcuff him, hitting one officer in the face with an elbow, but eventually he was placed in the back seat of a squad car in handcuffs.

"All of our patrol cars have bars on the windows and there were three other people inside the car that was stopped," explained Clemens. "While the officers were dealing with those three other people somehow the suspect was able to get one of his hands out of the handcuffs and then reach through the open window, through the bars to unlock the door from the outside."

Clemens says the 17-year-old took off running and is still being sought. He will be charged with a second escape, simple assault on law enforcement and other misdemeanor offenses.

A 16-year-old boy from Sioux Falls who was in the car was charged with false impersonation and another with possessing marijuana and paraphernalia.
