Sex addiction is more common than most people think! Jason VanRuler is a Sioux Falls therapist who works with people that have sex addictions.

“I think the first thing is if they are admitting of having difficulties---that’s really the first step and being honest with themselves. I think the next step is to reach out for some help. On my website (www.solomonrecovery.com) I have an assessment that one can take. It lets them know if there is a concern for them or perhaps not. There are also a good number of resources that one can go benefit from.”

So just how common is sex addiction?

“Sex addiction in the United States has been reported to be between three and six percent of the population. That number is a little bit dated. Given technology and the internet, we know that people are searching for sex is probably one of the most sought after subjects.”

VanRuler says the addiction is more than just about sex!

“For sex addicts it’s really tough because it is not just sex. It’s about process and the fantasy. I think they spend a lot of time planning what’s going to happen and how to hide it. For the addicts, it’s very difficult.”

VanRuler says internet porn is helping to feed sex addiction.

“It’s really just expedited the process. When I was growing up, you had to drive somewhere to get pornography or get a video. Now we can find porn on our cell phones, tablets. If someone is going to have a problem, internet porn just make sit worse. With teens, that’s becoming more of an issue as well.”

The bottom line, according to VanRuler, is the help to treat the addiction right here in our community.

“Yes, I believe there is lot so hope. There are many different treatment services. I offer treatment as well as other providers in town. There is also inpatient treatment. Now more than ever there is good hope for someone struggling with sex addiction.”
