The mayor of Sioux Falls is moving ahead with his ambitious plan to increase the number of parks in the City.

Mayor Mike Heuether plans to open three parks in 2013, including Prairie Meadows Park near Journey Elementary on South Grange Avenue; Galway Park, in the southwestern section of Sioux Falls, and another on East Red Oak Drive near Rosa Parks Elementary.

Four parks are slated for 2015, including Prairie Hills West Park in the 69th Street and Louise Avenue area; Southern Vistas Park near Pettigrew Elementary on 57th Street and Tea-Ellis Road, Southeast Sioux Falls Park in Harrisburg near 68th Street and Bahnson Avenue; and a west side dog park.

Huether’s plan is to spend about $7 million on parks throughout the city in the next 5 years. The majority of the parks will be developed in the southern part of the city where most of the residential growth has taken place.

The Associated Press reports that land for most of the parks has already been purchased or is in the works to be purchased. More than $1 million has been set aside for land acquisition during the next five years.

In a recent survey conducted by the city, 91 percent of the residents of Sioux Falls thought parks were a good investment.
