It took almost 80 percent of the season, but the Sioux Falls Skyforce have seen their first call-up of the season. Briante Weber is headed to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports reported the roster move on Tuesday. The Grizzlies have been given an exception to increase their roster to 16 players because of numerous injuries thus Weber will be on a 10-day contract.

Not that there weren’t plenty of worthy candidates from a team that has posted the best record in the NBA Development League. Time finally arrived for the right NBA team to snag the right player.

Weber’s case has shown that patiently working your way back from a serious injury can lead to the game’s top level. In late Janurary of 2015 during his senior season at Virginia Commonwealth, he injured his knee during a game. Intense rehab followed, but Weber was not quite 100 percent ready for the professional game by October.

Miami issued a lifeline to the third all-time player on the NCAA steals list by signing him to be a part of the Heat’s training camp then immediately funneling him to Sioux Falls to continue getting physically fit.

Weber’s professional debut came during the NBADL Showcase. Over 22 games the former Ram has averaged 10.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals and ascending to the number 15 on the League’s Prospect Watch.

Two games stand out in Weber’s profile thus far. A triple-double (11 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists) during a blowout win against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants on February 23 catapulted him into the call-up discussion. He also raised some eyebrows against Grand Rapids on March 4 as he scored 22 points on 8 of 11 shooting with 10 boards and 6 dimes in another easy victory.

Other prospects may soon follow. However Weber’s promotion marks 24 of 27 years that the Sioux Falls Skyforce have seen one of their own make it to the Association.
