Last week's intense standoff was hard for many folks to endure.  The cold weather and fierce winds were tough to battle at times.  However the South Dakota Highway Patrolman who was shot during the proceedings suffered more than most.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety announced that Sergeant John Koenig was released from the hospital on Monday after suffering a gunshot wound during the 24-hour ordeal last Wednesday.

A 28-year veteran of the patrol, Koening was shot when he responded to the report of an individual threatening law enforcement officers.  Donald London, 42, of Kimball, subsequently barricaded himself in his residence and eventually surrendered.

According to a press release, Col. Craig Price, superintendent of the Highway Patrol, said, “We’re very thankful that Sgt. Koenig’s injuries were not life-threatening.  He and his family will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers as his recovery progresses.”

The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the case.
