Banfield Pet Hospitals, a national chain of veterinarians, did a study to find the states where dogs live the longest and the shortest lives.

Turns out the best place for a dog to live is right here in South Dakota. Maybe the colder weather is good because it encourages owners to take their dogs inside more often. And South Dakota is just awesome, that probably has a bit to do with it.

Here are the five states where dogs live the longest:

1.  South Dakota:  12.4 year life expectancy.

2.  Montana:  12.4 years.

3.  Oregon:  11.4 years.

4.  New Mexico:  11.4 years.

5.  Colorado:  11.4 years.
