As a state, South Dakota weighs in right about the middle of the pack compared to all fifty states when it comes to carrying a little extra jelly in our bellies.

The Rushmore state has the 23rd highest adult obesity rate in the U.S. according to a new report.

The “State of Obesity” report was conducted by the Trust for America’s Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It showed that across the country, U.S. adult obesity rates remained mostly steady during the past year.

However, obesity rates did increase in the states of Kansas, Minnesota, New Mexico, Ohio and Utah.

Here in South Dakota the obesity rate was at 29.8 percent. What is somewhat alarming is the way adults here in South Dakota have packed on the pounds since 1990.

Our state obesity rate in 1990 was at 10.7 percent. It jumped to 18.4 percent in 2000 and now we tip the scale at 29.8 percent in 2015.

Sounds like some of us need to back away from the buffet line, find a diet plan and become besties with an elliptical machine for awhile.

Based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance survey, the states with the highest obesity rates in the country are Arkansas, West Virginia and Mississippi. All three states have an obesity rate above 35 percent.

You will find the most svelte adults in the U.S. in the states of Hawaii, the District of Columbia and Colorado. Those three states reported the lowest obesity rates in the nation.
