Ever had someone refer to you as a 'friendly Midwesterner' when you were visiting another part of the country and they find out where you're from?  That is an example of a typical stereotype, but it turns out there may actually be some truth to it.

Personality and career assessment website Truity surveyed more than 12,000 residents in all 50 states, including the District of Columbia, to find out if where you grew up has any bearing on your personality. They then ranked the states based on the five dimensions of personality:

  • engaging with the world
  • getting along with others
  • responding to stress
  • using your mind
  • organizing your life

Some of the results that came back were surprising, some not so much.  They found that the Dakotas were the most 'friendly conservative' states in the country - not surprising.  But the most neurotic state - South Dakota?  Really?
