Attorney General Marty Jackley says the evidence clears a Mitchell Police Officer of a fatal shooting in early September.

The two people involved were Curtis Meyer of Mitchell and Senior Officer Russell Stevenson. Jackley summarizes the incident that took place on September 4. “The responding officer Stevenson, approached Curtis Meyer who had a Glock .45 between his legs. As Meyer began drawing the Glock, a struggle ensued during which officer Stevenson was forced to shoot Meyer with Meyer’s own weapon.”

According to Jackley, all the evidence supported Stevenson’s actions. “Based upon our DCI investigation, I have determined that Officer Stevenson was justified and really had no choice. (He used) lethal force to protect himself.”

The Division of Criminal Investigation conducted the probe at the request of the Mitchell Police Department. Additionally the Attorney General’s office offered thoughts and prayers to the Meyer family.
