The Supreme Court has declared that same-sex couples have the right to marry anywhere in the United States.

Governor Dennis Daugaard commented

I would have preferred for this change to come through the democratic process, rather than the courts.  We are a nation of laws, and the state will follow the law.  I will be working with the Attorney General to ascertain what the ruling means for state and local governments.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says he believed the decision should have been made by the voters of South Dakota but nonetheless state officials will "adhere to the rule of law."
