SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Hair sheared during a daylong cut-a-thon in honor of a slain Sioux Falls salon manager raised more than $4,000 for a scholarship in her memory.

Amanda Connors was shot to death outside the Cost Cutters salon on 41st Street in Sioux Falls on Sept. 11. KDLT-TV reports that on Thursday, the salon handed over the check to Stewart School, where Connors got her cosmetology license. The school has agreed to match up to $2,000.

Twenty-four-year-old Connors died while trying to protect an employee from the employee's boyfriend. Authorities say that Tyrone Smith kidnapped his two children, then went to the salon where his girlfriend worked. He killed Connors, then held his girlfriend, her co-workers and his children hostage briefly before killing himself.
