Some honorable members from The Red Cross of Eastern South Dakota chapter are headed to Louisiana to aid victims of the devastating flood near Baton Rouge.

Generally, two to five members is the size of a typical response team. However, the Red Cross chapters in South and North Dakota tripled that amount by sending a total of 15 volunteers among the two states. At least seven of those are from South Dakota.

Four emergency response vehicles will also head south as a result of the need for stronger relief efforts.

The Eastern South Dakota Red Cross’ executive director, Jennifer Ross, says that the individuals going to help have trained for months and years in preparation for when there is a need.

“This is a very large, catastrophic event and so this is a large group to be sending for our chapter,” she says. “Honestly, once they get on the ground, they’ll do what’s needed.”
