South Dakota’s Bethany Buell Talks About Her Pole Vault National Championship [VIDEO] [AUDIO]

This was the jump that game USD junior Bethany Buell the national championship in the women’s pole vault at the NCAA Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Saturday, as she cleared 14 feet, 7 1/4 inches.

She cleared eight different heights en route to the title, and over came some adversity along the way to do it.

Buell is the first USD athlete in the Division I era to win a national championship.  She’s the first Coyote to win a title at any level since Emma Erickson’s Division II win in the 800 meters in 2008.

Buell accomplished it all with less than a full season of jumping due to a torn ligament in her left shoulder.  But with the help of pole vault coach Derek Miles, that pain was nothing compared to the joy of winning in Eugene.

Buell’s teammate Emily Grove took seventh in the event.
