Heavy Snow

As the spring storm continued into Thursday morning we’re waking up to snow. And alot of it.

As of 4:30 am, Sioux Falls has received nearly 6″ of new snow. I spoke with the Sioux Falls office of the National Weather Service this morning and they were anticipating another 2 – 3″ of new snow before we can kiss ‘Walda’ goodbye.

We are still under a Winter Storm Warning until 1 pm Thursday.

Here is the latest forecast from the NWS:

WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 1 PM CDT THIS
AFTERNOON...

* TIMING…SNOW WILL CONTINUE EARLY THIS MORNING…THEN TAPER OFF
THE REST OF TODAY.

* ACCUMULATIONS…ADDITIONAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 INCH OR LESS
ARE EXPECTED AFTER DAYBREAK. PREVIOUSLY FALLEN ICE AND SNOW WILL
REMAIN. THE HEAVY WET SNOW AND REMAINING ICE WILL CAUSE
ADDITIONAL STRESS ON ALREADY STRESSED TREES AND POWER LINES.
ADDITIONAL POWER OUTAGES AS WELL AS DOWNED TREE BRANCHES AND
POWER LINES IS LIKELY. PLEASE PREPARE ACCORDINGLY.

There were several more limbs and branches that fell from already weighted down trees overnight.

“I have a bad feeling about this. Wet heavy snow on ice covered trees and power lines. What isn’t down already is in danger.” – KSFY’s Shaun Cable via Twitter (@shauncable)

Xcel says crews have restored power to more than 40,000, but about 20,000 in Sioux Falls are still without power.

One of the many hard hit areas, Hanson County, has opened it’s courthouse as use for a shelter for those who need it. That area was still without power as of early Thursday morning.

Xcel Energy map shows 17,663 customers without power in the Sioux Falls area including some in Humboldt, Garretson, Brandon.

A host of electrical trucks from different power companies have arrived in Sioux Sioux Falls in the last 24 hours from all over the Midwest.

Power was restored to the Crooks area Wednesday night after it’s resident’s had been without power for 32 hours. However, areas around Renner were heading into their 40th hour without power.

Most of the scanner traffic through the night was for downed trees, power lines, or electricity issues. One of the dangers this morning is that power lines that have fallen will be very hard to see with the new fallen snow.

One element of the spring storm we will be watching is the wind that is expected to ramp up through the day Friday as 15 – 30 mph gusts are expected.

We spoke with Galynn Huber for the Sioux Falls Street Department early this morning about traveling in Sioux Falls Thursday morning. He advised using extreme caution on the morning commute.

There will be several obstacles that you will need to navigate around so it’s going to be slow going”
