Residents Should Be Aware of Potential Scams Related to the Storm

Area residents need to be aware that dishonest individuals may attempt to take advantage of the current weather situation and try to scam trusting citizens. City officials have received reports of persons going door-to-door asking for donations for cleanup efforts.

Jerry Dahmen spoke with Sioux Falls Mayor Mike Huether about reported scams.

Following are some tips to help citizens recognize fraudulent activities:

  • The City does not go door-to-door asking for donations to help assist with cleanup.
  • Neither the Sioux Falls Police Department nor Sioux Falls Fire Rescue is seeking donations for recovery efforts.
  • Follow your instincts. If the offer for assistance seems too good to be true, investigate the offer before accepting it.
  • This cleanup effort may take weeks to months to complete. No cleanup decision needs to be made quickly. If someone is rushing you to provide funding for cleanup services, take your time and ensure that the service provider is legitimate.
  • Use an arborist licensed through the City of Sioux Falls to help you remove fallen trees and branches. Licensed arborists are required to have liability coverage. They also must have a level of knowledge to maintain the health of your trees and the safety of your property. Arborists are required to have licenses per City ordinance. To find a licensed arborist, go to www.siouxfalls.org/icestorm2013.
  • Fraud is a crime. If you suspect that an illegal activity is taking place, call Police at 9-1-1.
