The solar eclipse was subdued by strong thunderstorms that dropped heavy rains in Sioux Falls and elsewhere on Monday.

Storms developed about 10:45 AM in northern Turner and Lincoln Counties which eventually matured to the point of unleashing three to four inches of rain along the Lincoln/Minnehaha County line over 90 minutes. The National Weather Service reported over 2 inches of rain on the north side of Sioux Falls. A Flash Flood Warning was issued at 12:39 PM reflecting the communities of Tea, southern Sioux Falls, and Rowena that were hit hardest.

Street flooding was reported in various areas. The City of Sioux Falls issued a list of flooded during the late afternoon after the rain had passed including 69th and Minnesota, 41st and Cliff, 6th and Cliff, 57th and Bahnson, 57th and Sycamore, 85th and Grange, 33rd and Western, 33rd and Grange, Maple and North 4th Avenue, I-29 and Maple Street and Westport Avenue between 41st and 49th Street.

Areas around Parker were under siege as a warning was issued at 12:48 PM for Turner County. Turner County Emergency Management reported one inch hail in Parker to the National Weather Service as a result of this storm.

The main thrust of rain that produced widespread coverage rolled through after 1:00 PM when five counties were under threat of baseball sized hail and 70 mile per hour wind gusts. Actual reports featured one inch hail submitted by a Yankton media outlet.

Nonetheless from north to south a 30-mile swath was in the path of severe activity. Eventually it sustained its march into Iowa as the afternoon lingered before eventually decreasing its coverage area.
