Sioux Falls as a community can celebrate a successful Summit League Men’s and Women’s Basketball tournament no matter what happens on the court.

Sioux Falls has hosted the event since 2009 and will continue to do so for at least another five years. Commissioner Tom Douple feels that the city was fully committed to grow the Summit League tournament into what it is today.

“There was a can-do attitude here that I felt from the very beginning. (The League) made a decision to come here and it’s proven to be a great decision. The PREMIER Center is probably one of the best facilities I’ve been around for basketball. It’s top of the line.”

Douple also points out that those who make an extra effort to accept visitors is also beneficial to Sioux Falls.

“Everywhere you go in town whether it’s the hotel or restaurants, thousands of fans are coming in and staying overnight. The hospitality is fantastic. You’ve got a great city to showcase. That’s been very positive.”

According to Douple, the Summit League’s competitive profile is on the rise especially in Women’s Basketball. The conference is currently ranked 10th among 32 NCAA Division I conferences.

The Championship games are today (March 7) featuring Western Illinois vs. IUPUI for the Women’s title and either South Dakota State or Omaha will get the automatic bid to the Men’s NCAA tournament.
