You've heard of the Polar Plunge, New Year's Ice Plunge and many more cold dips that take place around the country.

This one later this month will not be outside but held indoors to raise money for two Black Hills swim teams.

A full-time lifeguard at the Deadwood Recreation Center is planning a 12-hour swimming event to benefit local swim clubs in honor of his 70th birthday.

Jim Phillips of Deadwood will swim from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on January 25th to raise money for the Black Hills Gold Swim Team and Lead-Deadwood '76ers Swim Team.

Phillips hopes to raise at least $7,500 for the swim clubs. He tells the Black Hills Pioneer that he's already raised nearly $6,000 on a crowdfunding site and more than $1,500 in cash donations.

Phillips has been working with his son, Jason, a strength and training coach at Colorado State University, for several months to prepare for the 12-hour swim.

He estimates that he'll swim at least 40 miles during the fundraiser.
