The blockbuster summer movie season is underway. Some of the most anticipated movies of the summer are on the big screen right now. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, Wonder Woman, The Mummy, Cars 3 and Transformers: The Last Knight are just a few of the megahits that movie-goers are enjoying this summer.

Why not take a road trip and experience a movie on the big screen in a small town? Here's a list of nearby theaters, what's showing this weekend and the small price you'll pay to drive just a few miles outside the big city.

 

  • Verne Drive-In Theater - Luverne, Minnesota

    The Vern Drive-In in Luverne, Minnesota is open seven days a week in the summer. Movies start at dusk. Tickets are $5 per person for everyone 6 years old and up. The concession stand serves everything from popcorn to mini donuts to cheeseballs and chicken strips.

    Movies showing this weekend are Cars 3 and Wonder Woman.

    The Verne Drive-In is just 45 minutes east of Sioux Falls. Located at 1607 S. Kniss Ave in Luverne, MN.

  • Dells Theater - Dell Rapids, South Dakota

    The movie on the big screen this weekend at the Dells Theater is Cars 3. Showtimes in 2D are 7:00 PM nightly, plus Saturday and Sunday matinees at 4:15 PM. Showtimes in 3D are 2:00 PM Saturday and Sunday.

    Remember, it's Quarry Days this weekend in Dell Rapids, so while you're enjoying the parade, vendors in the park, live music and more, take time to enjoy a movie at the Dells Theater.

    Prices:

    7:00 PM - Adults $7, Kids 12 and under $5

    2:00 PM - All tickets $7 for 3D showing

    4:15 PM - All tickets are $5

    Located at 511 E. 4th Street in Dell Rapids. It's just a short 30 minute drive from Sioux Falls.

  • The Lund Theater - Viborg, South Dakota

    Forty-six minutes southwest of Sioux Falls you'll find The Lund Theater in Viborg, SD at 119 N. Main. Not only will you see a summer blockbuster on the big screen in Viborg, you'll get a history lesson too. The Lund Theater is the oldest continuous running theater in South Dakota. The theater celebrated its 100th anniversary in October of 2015. The theater is a non-profit and is operated by volunteers.

    Affordable concessions are available. You can get a large popcorn for only $5 and a refill only costs $2. Plus, they have soft drinks, water, and candy. All candy is only $1.

    The movie showing June 23-28 is Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Showtime is 7:30 PM Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday, June 28.

  • Madison Movie Theater - Madison, South Dakota

    The Madison Movie Theater, formerly West Twin Movie Theater, is located at 1133 NW 2nd Street in Madison.

    Now showing at the Madison Movie Theater is Transformers: The Last Knight at 7:10 PM and Cars 3 at 7:20 PM.

  • Palace Theater - Luverne, Minnesota

    The historic Palace Theater in Luverne, MN was built in 1915. In 2007, it went through a $1 million restoration which included replacing exterior brick, replacing seating and carpeting, and installing state-of-the-art theater rigging and lighting systems. Not only does the theater show blockbuster movies, it's also used for local productions.

    This week, the Palace Theater will be showing Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Showtime is 7:00 PM June 23, 24 and 25.

    Admission is $7 for adults, and children 3-12th grade pay $5.

    The Palace Theater is located at 104 Main Street in Luverne.
