The Farmers' Almanac 2018 edition is out. The Farmers' Almanac is celebrating its 200th anniversary. They've been predicting weather since 1818, and according to many Almanac followers, their forecasts are 80-85 percent accurate. That's pretty impressive.

You're probably wondering how anyone can predict the weather five months from now. The Farmers' Almanac has used nearly the same formula for 200 years.

The formula takes things like sunspot activity, tidal action of the Moon, position of the planets, and a variety of other factors into consideration. The only person who knows the exact formula is the Farmers’ Almanac weather prognosticator who goes by the pseudonym of Caleb Weatherbee. To protect this proprietary and reliable formula, the editors of the Farmers’ Almanac prefer to keep both Caleb’s true identity and the formula a closely guarded brand secret.

So, do we need to tune up the snowblower and buy a heavy duty parka this winter? According the new edition, the Midwest will be cold with moderate snowfall and not as harsh as usual.
