There is one surefire way to get on the bad side of every neighbor on your block, and that's being the person on the block who lets your yard turn into the proverbial looking jungle.

Who hasn't lived in a neighborhood before with one of those lazy SOB types that breaks out the mower about twice a year, and that's if you're lucky. Their yard ends up looking like you could take an African Safari in it by the end of the summer the way they've neglected it.

Ultimately the yard ends up being a haven for a wide variety of noxious weeds and assorted critters. It's the type of yard where your neighbor Ed could wander into and never be heard from again.

Hopefully you're not the guy or gal with that kind of yard? But if you have a neighbor that appears to be allergic to yard work, the City is here to help.

There's actually a city ordinance that requires you to keep your lawn shorter than 8 inches in height and noxious weeds under control.

When the City receives a complaint about a parcel of land that is being neglected, the City investigates the complaint with a site visit. The next step is to send out a courtesy letter to notify you of the situation and then a re-inspection of the property.  If the violation is not corrected, the property owner receives a $100 citation and must pay the cost of a lawn mowing service contracted by the City.

The City of Sioux Falls is so serious about this, they've established a “Lawn Enforcement Hotline.” That number is 978-6900.  Residents can call the number during normal business hours to report potential nuisance vegetation violations. If you call after hours or on weekends,  just leave a message and the City will get back to you.

Residents are also able to report potential violations online at siouxfalls.org/weeds.
